Mica powder is a versatile industrial material derived from mica, a group of silicate minerals characterized by their unique sheet-like (platy) structure and perfect basal cleavage. Mica occurs naturally in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, with major global deposits in India, China, the United States, and Russia. The primary types used for powder production include muscovite (colorless to pale) and biotite (dark-colored), though synthetic mica is also produced for specialized applications.

The extraction process begins with mining raw mica ore, which is then crushed and ground to separate the platy crystals from host rocks. Mechanical delamination or wet processing techniques further refine the material into fine powders, ranging from coarse flakes (used in roofing materials) to ultra-fine particles (under 10 microns for cosmetics). Key properties of mica powder include:

High Dielectric Strength: Makes it ideal for electrical insulators in capacitors and electronics.

Thermal Stability: Resists degradation at high temperatures, suitable for oven coatings and automotive parts.

Lustrous Appearance: Reflective platelets create shimmering effects in paints, plastics, and cosmetics (e.g., eyeshadows, nail polishes).

Chemical Inertness: Non-reactive nature ensures safety in food packaging and pharmaceutical coatings.
