Barium sulfate (BaSO₄) is the most widely used inert extender pigment in resin coatings, available in two main forms: natural barium sulfate (barite/ground BaSO₄) and precipitated barium sulfate (synthetic BaSO₄). While both provide chemical stability, high density, and low cost, they differ significantly in purity, particle size, whiteness, dispersion, and final coating performance. Understanding these differences helps formulators select the right grade for epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic, and polyester resin systems.
1. Production & Purity
- Natural Barium Sulfate (Barite): Mined from barite ore, then crushed and ground. Purity typically 85–95%, with impurities like SiO₂, CaCO₃, and iron oxides. Whiteness ranges 80–92% (variable by ore source).
- Precipitated Barium Sulfate: Made via controlled chemical precipitation(barium sulfide + sodium sulfate or sulfuric acid). Purity ≥98% (98–99%), very low impurities. Whiteness 95–98% (consistent batch to batch).
2. Particle Size & Dispersion
- Barite: Coarser (typically 325–2000 mesh, ~45–75 μm or finer milled grades), broader distribution. Harder to disperse; may cause rough surface, poor gloss, and sedimentationin high gloss systems.
- Precipitated BaSO₄: Ultra fine (0.5–5 μm), narrow particle size distribution. Excellent wetting and dispersion in resins; minimizes agglomeration, fisheyes, and craters.

Both grades are chemically inert and compatible with most resin systems. The difference lies in performance level and application requirements.
