Hezhen Diatomaceous Earth Powder For Industrial Water Treatment Effectively Removing Heavy Metal Ions And Suspended Particles Suitable For Municipal Sewage And Industrial Wastewater Treatment Projects

In modern industrial production and urban operation, wastewater treatment has become a key link to ensure environmental protection and sustainable development. Enterprises and municipal departments are constantly seeking efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly water treatment materials. Diatomaceous earth powder, also known as diatomite powder, has become a preferred choice in the water treatment industry due to its unique porous structure and strong adsorption capacity. This natural mineral material is formed by the accumulation and fossilization of diatom remains over millions of years, with a specific surface area of up to 50-300 m²/g and a large number of nano-scale pores. These structural characteristics enable it to effectively capture and adsorb various impurities in water, including heavy metal ions (such as lead, mercury, cadmium), suspended particles, and organic pollutants.

When applied in industrial wastewater treatment, diatomaceous earth powder shows excellent performance in removing heavy metals. Taking electroplating wastewater treatment as an example, electroplating processes produce large amounts of wastewater containing high concentrations of nickel, chromium, and zinc ions. Traditional treatment methods such as chemical precipitation often have problems of incomplete removal and large sludge production. After adding 1-3% diatomaceous earth powder to the wastewater treatment system, the porous structure of diatomite powder can adsorb heavy metal ions through ion exchange and surface complexation. Tests show that the removal rate of nickel ions can reach more than 98%, chromium ions more than 97%, and zinc ions more than 96%, which is 15-20% higher than traditional methods. At the same time, the sludge generated after treatment is reduced by about 30%, which greatly reduces the subsequent sludge treatment cost. In addition, diatomaceous earth powder has good compatibility with other water treatment agents. When used together with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and polyacrylamide (PAM), it can form a more stable flocculent structure, further improving the sedimentation efficiency of impurities and shortening the treatment cycle.​In municipal sewage treatment, diatomaceous earth powder plays an important role in improving the quality of effluent water. Municipal sewage contains a large number of suspended solids, organic matter, and ammonia nitrogen. In the secondary sedimentation tank stage, adding an appropriate amount of diatomaceous earth powder can enhance the adsorption and flocculation effect of activated sludge. A municipal sewage treatment plant in East China with a daily treatment capacity of 100,000 tons conducted a 3-month trial. After adding 0.8% diatomaceous earth powder to the aeration tank, the concentration of suspended solids (SS) in the effluent decreased from 25 mg/L to less than 10 mg/L, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate increased from 85% to 92%, and the ammonia nitrogen removal rate increased from 78% to 88%. All indicators met the national first-class A emission standard. Moreover, diatomaceous earth powder can reduce the loss of activated sludge, improve the activity of microorganisms in the sludge, and extend the sludge age, thereby reducing the frequency of sludge discharge and saving operating costs.​
